The Summer That Changed Kevin's Life

From Summer Camp kid to Shake-A-Leg Miami Board Member — a story of what one summer by the water can do.

For over 30 years, Shake-A-Leg Miami has been the backdrop for thousands of life-changing stories. Kids who stepped onto a boat for the first time and walked away with a new sense of who they could become. Families who found a community. Teens who discovered confidence they didn't know they had.

This summer, as part of the Batchelor Challenge, we're sharing some of those stories — one each week — to celebrate the real, lasting impact of what a single summer by the water can do.

We're starting with Kevin's.

Where it all began

Years ago, a Miami kid named Kevin showed up for his first day of Summer Camp at Shake-A-Leg Miami. He didn't know it yet, but that summer would shape the rest of his life.

In his own words:

"My experience with Shake-A-Leg Miami started as a kid attending Summer Camp, and it truly shaped the trajectory of my life. What stood out most wasn't just learning how to sail — it was the sense of independence and confidence that came with it. Being on the water created a level playing field where limitations faded and possibilities expanded."

"The friendships I built during those summers were equally impactful. That environment instilled a mindset of resilience and optimism that I've carried with me ever since."

"Coming back later as a mentor, volunteer, and eventually a staff member was incredibly meaningful. It gave me the opportunity to give back and help create those same experiences for the next generation."

Full circle

That kid from summer camp grew up to build a career in the marine industry — and today, he's come full circle as a member of the Shake-A-Leg Miami Board of Directors, helping guide the organization that once put him on the water.
