About the program

Blind Sailing in Miami, Coming Soon

A new program at our Coconut Grove campus

Shake-A-Leg Miami is preparing a Blind Sailing program for people who are blind or have low vision. Sessions will be led by instructors certified by the American Sailing Association (ASA), and you will sail from our universally accessible campus in Coconut Grove, right on Biscayne Bay. Read more about adaptive sailing at Shake-A-Leg Miami.

For many blind and low-vision sailors, sailing is about feel and sound: the wind on your face, the heel of the boat and the water moving along the hull, together with spoken guidance from sighted crew. Blind sailors have raced this way at world championships since 1992.

Dates, schedule and cost will be announced when registration opens. When you get in touch, tell us whether you have sailed before and what would help you feel at home on the water. Family members, friends and organizations that work with people who are blind or have low vision are welcome to reach out too.

What to Expect

01

ASA-certified instructors: Sessions will be led by instructors certified by the American Sailing Association, the organization behind the ASA 101 to 104 keelboat courses we already teach.

02

A universally accessible campus: Our Coconut Grove campus is wheelchair accessible from the parking lot to a dock you can roll onto, and its accessibility details were mapped independently by Wheel The World.

03

A history with blind sailing: Blind and visually impaired sailors first sailed with Shake-A-Leg Miami in the 1990s, and in 1999 we hosted the World Blind Sailing Championships in Miami, with 11 teams.
