Every year, students, volunteers, and employees everywhere gear up for the highly anticipated summer vacation. Living in Miami, the ideal summer consists of hot days, full sun, maybe a storm cloud (or two), beach waves, and swimming pools. Spending time with friends and family is a good addition.
A lot of children go without the magic of summer vacation. Maybe because their parents must work through the summer days, or because they don’t have an inground pool in their backyard, or because of a disability, or because they don’t know about Shake-A-Leg.
Well, Shake-A-Leg has the most magic of summers awaiting your child, no matter their ability. Summer should be relaxed, educational, and most importantly, fun. At Shake-A-Leg, your child can experience this all summer long! Our Marine Academy Camp and Adventure Island Camp is the perfect mix of all of these, allowing your child to have the best summer of their lives surrounded by highly trained professionals who's number one priority on top of safety is a good time.
Marine Academy is the in-land camp at Shake-A-Leg, where learning and enjoyment go hand in hand. Your child’s day is spent on and off the water of Biscayne Bay through highly educational activities.
Groups: Children are divided by age into numbered groups with water-related group names, such as Guppies, Manatees, or Turtles. Each group is led by a MDCPS certified teacher, as well as teacher assistants and mentors. Your child is safe in their hands, and they’re guaranteed to have a good time!
Security: There’s only one way in and out of Shake-A-Leg during the summer, and it is heavily secured by a group of individuals you can trust. With safety as our number one priority, you can trust that your child will be protected!
Sailing: A professional sailor takes your child on a sail through the bay and even teaches them how to sail if they’re interested. Our freedom sail boats offer maximum safety, equipped with water safety tools, a lifeguard/CPR/AED certified outdoor educator, and mandatory life vests on every child. Our freedom sailboats are also handicapped accessible, so if your child is in a wheelchair, they can still experience the magic of sailing.
Kayaking: Guided by lifeguard/CPR/AED certified outdoor educators, children explore the Bay and kayak to our Shake-A-Leg island and sandbar. It’s excellent exercise and great fun! We have accessible kayaks suited for children with disabilities, so they, too, can experience the magic and freedom of being on the Bay!
Outrigging: A larger, double canoe-like boat that fully embodies teamwork, called the Outrigger, can fit an entire unit of kids and teachers, led by two lifeguard/CPR/AED certified outdoor educators. This vessel also travels to the island and sandbar.
SeaLab: One of our larger vessels fits to carry children, mentors, teachers, and guests alike, called the Pearson. This isn’t an ordinary power boat trip to the middle of the Bay. This trip consists of an educational lesson. Shake-A-Leg highly believes in STEM learning, so time traveling to the sandbar is spent learning about that week’s theme by a lifeguard/CPR/AED certified outdoor educator, and an esteemed Captain.
Paddleboard: Your child has the opportunity to learn balance! This activity occurs alongside the SeaLab activity.
Art Room: As well as STEM led learning, Shake-A-Leg strongly believes in the arts. Children spend their time in the art room making crafts relevant to that week’s theme. In addition to the creativity output, these crafts are educational!
Classroom: Education shouldn’t stop when it’s summer, so why not make it fun? Children spend their time in the classroom learning about that week’s theme. An example of these themes are Mangroves, Buoyancy, or Changing Tides.
Lunch: You can pack your child’s lunch, but for those days when you don’t have time, Shake-A-Leg offers a free lunch to every child at Marine Academy Camp. Our lunches are nutritional and delicious, with a side of Pizza Fridays!
Presentation: In addition to the fun-packed days at Shake-A-Leg, we’ll often have presentations from visitors. A few examples are creative craft-led presentations by St. Jude Hospital, or NFL superstars! There’s a wide variety of fun learning opportunities for your child to experience.
End of the Summer Show: At the end of each fun summer, your child has the opportunity to perform alongside their classmates at Family Night! The best part is that you can watch your child shine on stage. This event is similar to the End of the Year shows at your child’s school, only this event includes trips to the Bay via power boat, kayak, sailing, or outrigger.
