Shake-A-Leg was founded on the belief that water has the power to transform lives. Through an intense focus on inclusion, we’ve made that happen.
For over three decades, Shake-A-Leg has been more than just a sailing center. It's been a sanctuary, a playground, a classroom, and an opportunity for thousands of people of all ages and abilities. Our mission is rooted in the idea that everyone deserves access to water.
For those navigating life with a disability, recovering from injury, or just looking for a community where you're welcomed exactly as you are, Shake-A-Leg is built for you.
Adaptivity Begins
Accessibility for all begins at the shoreline of every path. Reaching the water isn’t always that simple. That’s why our entire campus is designed to be wheelchair accessible, including the dock and the parking lot. Individuals with limited mobility have every opportunity to board a boat like any other individual. Removable ramps are equipped and ready for any awaiting passenger. In addition to the physical elements, our staff and volunteers are always ready to assist. These aspects of Shake-A-Leg open doors for independence for individuals of all abilities.
Adaptive Kayaks
Kayaking is an extremely freeing way to experience being on the water. We wanted to make this experience accessible to every individual, which is why we provide adaptive kayaks and paddles. Stabilized kayaks make the experience feel safer, ergonomic paddles ensure the upmost comfort, and seating support makes kayaking accessible to anyone who wants to explore the waters of Biscayne Bay!
Adaptive Sailing
The 20” adaptive Freedom Sailboat was what started Shake-A-Leg. We wanted every individual to experience life on the water, specifically on a sailboat. We’ve since then filled several of our sailboats with adaptive chairs, ensuring a comfortable experience for everyone who boards. We give participants the tools and the trust to captain their own experiences.
Inclusion at Shake-A-Leg isn’t an option, it’s the foundation. Every part of our campus and every piece of equipment have been thoughtfully designed to inspire and confirm that you belong here.
For some, it’s their first time on the water. For others, it’s their return to a world they thought they’d lost access to. Either way, the transformation is real, and it starts with accessibility.
