On January 25, 2020, the rowing community of South Florida participated in the second annual Shake-An-Erg competition to benefit Shake-A-Leg Miami. For those new to rowing, an “erg,” or ergometer, is an indoor rowing machine that provides the most complete no-impact, full-body strength and cardio exercise available.
The competition was led by rowing enthusiasts, and major donors, Elaine and José Segrera. We are most grateful for their energy and dedication in creating such a unique and successful event. This year’s goal was to increase the number of participants as well as funds raised. Both goals were exceeded by over 100% thanks to the tireless efforts of Elaine and José.
Nearly 500 able-bodied and disabled rowers challenged themselves and each other for the title of fastest on the erg from various clubs and schools. To showcase the universal appeal of the sport, children as young as 10 years old as well as youth and adults of all ages competed. Additionally, over 200 spectators attended to cheer and encourage the participants.
Chris Sachs, 1992 Olympic contender in rowing, was the event’s emcee and announced awards for 36 categories.
Pat Ward, a wounded veteran who joined us from Miami Beach Rowing Club, was preparing for the upcoming world competition with the intention of going on to the Special Olympics in Paris. See video about Pat here.
Sponsorship support was generously provided by lead sponsor, Wells Fargo, as well as contributions from Withers Worldwide and Go Pilates.
Raffle prizes were also kindly donated, adding to the festivities. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. provided a six-night Caribbean cruise; multiple restaurant gift cards were contributed by Grove Bay Hospitality Group; and a healthy Shaklee starter kit was shared by Ken Smith. We are grateful for the thoughtfulness of each one which made the event even more fun.
This type of event successfully shares the mission of Shake-A-Leg and the important services we provide to the community. We look forward to hosting the third annual Shake-An-Erg event in January 2021. See you then!
