Waterman Can and So Can You !
Can He Paddle for 24 hours around Manhattan island?
Kevin Horgan an extreme adventurer and stand up paddler will challenge his skill and endurance by paddling around the island of Manhattan for 24 hours. He will launch on July 2nd at approximately 2:00 pm. He will head south and expects to complete 3 laps for a total of approximately 85 miles. This will be his longest distant. His previous record is 73 miles between the Oahu and Kauai Hawaiian islands completing in 23 hours.
The purpose of the paddle is to bring awareness of the power of the water in improving health and independence. And raise funds to provide programs and services to people with disabilities and wounded soldiers and their families.
Horgan a life long waterman grew up in Newport RI. His passion for the water and strong work ethic has provided an ongoing source of support to this brother Harry in overcoming a paralyzing injury. They have created the Shake A Leg Miami Sea Base, which serves thousands of people with various challenges each year. Most recently the organization, in cooperation with the Wounded Warrior Project, University of Miami and the Miami VA, has created pilot programs for wounded solders which proved to be very effective.
Though this extreme paddle Horgan hopes to generate awareness of this incredible facility and funds to provides scholarships to those in need. This paddle will also bring together leading organizations and individuals who share a passion for the water and want to assist people with disabilities and wounded solders become successful in life. The organizations include, USO, Show Management, Yacht International, (Drury Gallagher and Tim Johnson’s organization), Chuck’s Fishing Company Shake A Leg Miami, American Airlines, Adam Carlin, AHCS, and Kreps & DeMaria.
Kevin said “New York City inspires me. It’s the planets gateway to new worlds of opportunity. The birth place for countless dreams and incredible accomplishments. I will be paddling past our nations Icons of Freedom, Independence, strength and Accomplishments;, Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, Aircraft Carrier Intrepid, Brooklyn Bridge and more, and just before our nation’s birthday and celebration of independence. Through my efforts I hope I will inspire others to join with me in making a contribution, that will help of people with disabilities and wounded soldiers develop the skills necessary to improve their independence and to ensure they can pursue and achieve their American Dream.”
