When the award winning young star of the academy award winning film about a pregnant teen, Ellen Page was asked by director Jason Reitman if she had any ideas about what music her character would
be listening to, she didn’t hesitate to suggest the Moldy Peaches and its female conscience, Kimya Dawson. The words and music of Dawson proved to be a perfect fit for the world of the film’s rebellious female lead, and so Juno’s soundtrack leans heavily on Dawson’s material.
During the last four years, Kimya has been touring and recording almost non-stop. Driving her mini-van from coast to coast, playing her songs to audiences who are drawn to her quirky optimism and wry observations about what it means to live on the fringes of what is normal.
There may be something really precious about being alone and sad, but there is something powerful and reassuring about watching someone blossom out of that cocoon, sprout wings, and learn to fly. The world is in a state of disarray and Kimya sees that, but she also sees all the magnificent strangeness and unwavering beauty in the world and in people. And she shows us how to see it too.
Shake-A-Leg Miami and Kimya Dawson are also a natural fit. For 18 years Shake-a-leg has been filling the sails of disabled and disadvantaged children and adults in South Florida with courage
and hope.
