For Students of all abilities
Today’s technological world demands new standards and definitions of what constitutes literacy. Shake-A-Leg’s Multimedia Center is designed not only to provide this empowering knowledge, its curricula is also structured so as to help students improve their scores on Florida’s standardized F.C.A.T. exams and, at the same time, meet Shake-A-Leg’s own education hallmarks: experiential hands-on learning and fun doing it.

Students and campers are soon able to successfully function in an environment that combines multiple media including text, audio, graphics, animation, video, and interactivity. Together they explore new avenues of learning that are reflective of today’s “real world” setting – and all in an atmosphere that enhances academics, learning, self-esteem, and positive character traits.

The Shake-A-Leg Multimedia Center is also devoted to using digital technology to create opportunities for people with disabilities. We find that when we create an open-minded atmosphere and allow all students to use this technology, an extraordinary world of possibilities and experiences open up.

The center uses a variety of adaptive video equipment and computer software that empowers disabled students in new and innovative ways. Come for a visit and don’t be surprised when you see students cruising around with a video camera and microphone attached to their wheelchairs while conducting interviews and filming events; you may even see a quadriplegic who has no use of his hands wearing a device on his head that enables him to control a computer and edit video just by using subtle head movements.

Producing Smiles
Every student that comes through the film crew track not only produces their own ‘Kids Teaching Kids’ video, but at the end of the term, they get to take it home with them - after they’ve designed their own DVD label!

Shake-A-Leg students produce science videos covering all the major science benchmarks for the State of Florida. Teachers have already begun to use these videos as teaching tools.
